In the culinary world of networking, it’s not just the main course (your primary follow-up) that matters, but also the side dishes — those small, thoughtful gestures that can leave a lasting impression.

Here’s how to add these meaningful touches to your post-conference communications:

Personalized Reminders: Just as a well-chosen side dish recalls the flavors of the main course, your follow-up should remind them of your initial conversation. Mention a specific detail from your discussion to show you were genuinely engaged. For instance, “I remember you mentioned your interest in [topic] at the conference. I found this [article, webinar, etc.] that aligns with our discussion.”

Celebrate Their Achievements: Acknowledge any recent success they’ve shared on social media or during your conversation. A message like, “Congratulations on [recent achievement]! It’s great to see your hard work paying off,” shows that you’re paying attention to their accomplishments.

Offering Assistance: Offer help or insights in areas they might be interested in. For example, “I noticed you’re working on [project/topic]. I have some experience in that area and would be happy to share my insights if it would be helpful to you.”

Birthday or Work Anniversary Wishes: LinkedIn can be a great tool for this. A simple, “Happy Birthday!” or “Congratulations on another year at [company]! Wishing you continued success,” can make a positive impact.

Small Tokens of Appreciation: Depending on the relationship’s nature, sending a small token like a book or an interesting article can be a thoughtful gesture. Ensure it’s appropriate and professional, such as, “Based on our conversation about [topic], I thought you might enjoy this book.”

Acknowledging Special Occasions: If you know they have a big presentation, a trial, or a significant event coming up, a message of support can be meaningful. “Just wanted to wish you the best for your upcoming [event]. I’m sure you’ll do great!”

Remember, in the world of post-conference networking, these “side dishes” of small gestures can enhance the “main course” of your professional relationship. They show attentiveness, thoughtfulness, and a genuine interest in the person beyond just a business connection.

Don’t Forget the Side Dishes: Small Gestures Matter!

✔️ Mention details from your initial conversation to show engagement.
✔️ Celebrate their achievements or acknowledge special occasions.
✔️ Offer assistance or insights related to their interests.
